Spring Book Club Book

We are working on selecting a book for the spring book club, which will begin February 6th. If you have a suggestion of an educational book (it can be technology-related, but doesn't have to be), please email Meri Carnahan at carnahan@doe.in.gov. We plan to announce the next selection in the next two weeks so you can add it to your wish lists and read over break, if you'd like.

Kids Deserve It! Week 9: Chapters 25-27

Hopefully you were all able to spend some time "unplugging and recharging" during Thanksgiving break and are ready for the last three or four weeks of the semester. How do you recharge yourself? This might not be a full disconnect, as the authors suggested, but how do you relax and focus on you? Do you have an example to share where you have really thought outside the box, but kept the focus on the content? What else jumped out at you from this reading?

Next week we will read and discuss the last 3 chapters of the book, chapters 28-30. It's hard to believe that our 10-week book club is almost complete. Please have all of your comments made by the end of the day Monday, December 12th. I will send out PGP emails that week. If you have not already done so, please register for the book club by completing this registration form. That is how I get your email addresses to send PGPs.

Kids Deserve It! Week 8: Chapters 22-24

Here are a few questions to consider discussing this week:

  • What are some of your favorite tools for continuing your learning?
  • Do you remember a time when you got the "alien look" from colleagues about a new idea you had? How did you work through the feelings of doubt those looks may have caused?
  • How do you seek out support for the battles you face?
Thank you for all you do for the students in Indiana! We hope you all enjoy a few well-deserved days off this week! Next week we will be reading and discussing chapters 25-27.

Kids Deserve It! Week 7: Chapters 19-21

When you experience self-doubt, how do you get re-focused on the good work that you're doing and grow from those doubts? Do you take opportunities to "act like a child" in connecting with your students? To borrow one of the authors' questions, "how do you stay focused on kids and on doing what's best for them." Share thoughts on any or all of these questions or comments from other participants or discuss something else that struck you in these chapters.

Next week we will read and discuss chapters 22-24.

Kids Deserve It! Week 6: Chapters 16-18

The focus of these chapters tie in so well together. What is your favorite thing about teaching? What keeps you from stopping? And/or, how do you build and maintain relationships with your students?

Next week we will read and discuss chapters 19-21.
