Ditch That Textbook Week 7: Ditch That Curriculum

In chapter 34 Matt writes, "The motivation to ditch that textbook isn't only -- or even mostly -- driven by a desire to go paperless or create technology-powered lessons; it's about purpose. What do you want to do with the powerful platform you've been given?" Why do you want to "ditch that textbook"? What do you want to be known for as a teacher? What do you want your students to be known for and/or to know at the end of the year? Is there another idea from this reading that you want to discuss?

Next week will be the conclusion of the fall book club. If you are behind in your reading and commenting, now is the time to catch up on both. You will have until Friday, October 30 to make your comments to all the blog posts to be eligible for the PD grant and PGPs.

Ditch That Textbook Week 6: Ditch That Textbook Part 2

In our reading today, Matt talked a lot about utilizing videos in the classroom. Are you creating videos to use in your teaching or are your students creating videos to share their learning? If so, what are you using to create your videos? Or have you found good videos online? What else did you find meaningful in these chapters?

Representatives from the IDOE Office of eLearning will be at the ICE Conference this week. If you are attending, please stop by our booth and say hi or attend one of our sessions. Also, if you are attending the conference you will have many opportunities to attend sessions with Matt Miller.

We only have two weeks left in the book club discussion. Next week we will be reading and discussing chapters 34-38.

Ditch That Textbook Week 5: Ditch That Textbook Part 1

In this section of the book, Matt gets down to more of the specifics and logistics of how to ditch the textbook, specifically where to put the content and what that content is or could be. How far have you gotten down this road? Have you located or created online content? And if so how are you sharing it with your students? If you are not this far yet, what do you think you want to try first? What questions do you have for your fellow readers who might have some experiences from which they have learned?

It is so exciting to see all of your comments come in each day and I love seeing the connections you are making. Keep up the good work! For next week we will be reading and discussing chapters 28-33.
