What Connected Educators Do Differently Week 5: Key Connector 4 Give and Take...and Give Some More

This chapter is filled with a lot of great information on the giving and taking in a PLN. It seems to me that most of us who are utilizing social media to connect with a PLN are mostly givers or takers. I think it's harder to find a balance of the two. What are your thoughts on this? And where do you feel that you fit, as a giver or a taker or a combination of the two? Or if you are new to a social media PLN, how do you think you'll find a balance in giving and taking?

  1. Great news about our own twitter chat! There might be others who've read the book outside of this group who would want to join in.

    As far as being a giver or taker, I seem to go in spurts. Right now as I watch ISTE from afar, I'm doing a lot of taking! I am retweeting many things that I see, but not much of it is original to me. When I was at the eLead conference in Anderson (which was great, BTW) I did try to tweet out many of the things that were referenced in the keynotes. Once again, not my thoughts or ideas, but things I thought would interest others.

    For my schools and AISLE, I do try to share news of upcoming opportunities for professional learning.

    One of the most thought-provoking parts of the chapter to me was the "Taking by Stealing" part. Sometimes the "stealers" can actually modify or improve an idea. I have to admit that I re-read several of the sentences in this section to comprehend what they meant about borrowing vs stealing. Reading this also made me wonder: how much of the borrowing/stealing online that we do is actually with our everyday colleagues? Do we do more of that in person? When I think about my interactions on twitter, not that many of them are with my co-workers. (although maybe it's because some of that is in person or via email)

    Another thing this chapter made me wonder about: for a time, it seemed that some of the new teacher evaluation systems were going to make educators somewhat competitive: the idea that there was a "pool" of money set aside for the highest rated teachers. I heard mention of people not wanting to share (not in my own district) great ideas, because that would help others get a higher rating (Yes, where is the thought of in the best interest of the students in this?)

    The Take 5 in this chapter definitely involves working with others to get them accomplished.

    1. I agree with you on the stealing can be made better. I think of the MANY things I find via Pinterest and how I've reworked them to work for me in my classroom. That is stealing defined by our book. I was told throughout my student teaching, "beg, borrow, and steal" that saying makes more sense to me now.

      I also enjoyed the story in the chapter about the teacher who wouldn't share the lesson plan book. How crazy! As a new teacher (this is my 3rd year) I can't tell you how many times I've asked for lesson plan ideas and everyone has just given them freely! But in our evaluation system I can see how stealing from each other would make some "horde" their ideas and materials as their own for the sake of being evaluated as highly effective.

  2. Of all the chapters so far this has been my favorite. I connected with it more than the others. I feel that I am on the taker side because I’m not as connected as I could and should be. I follow so many accounts that are just good for my content (USDA, Family Life Circle, etc) and not other educators. I need to seek out other educators on Twitter.
    Balance of giving and taking is probably difficult, but as you get more engaged into a community I think it levels its self out. Just like family- we are always giving and taking but we don’t really consciously realize it. I think by asking for help (taking) you could really be helping other educators because maybe they had the same question but felt too uncomfortable asking. I guess its all about perspective.

    1. I totally relate to your post. I am also on currently on the 'taker' side of things. I often don't open up and offer information...I'm not sure why. Maybe I am uncomfortable offering unsolicited advice?

    2. I also really relate to your post as I am on the 'taker' side! I also agree with the comment above...I don't really offer information or advice....maybe a little too hesitant with that!! If I was standing with a colleague and we were talking about lesson ideas, I know I would freely offer and take advice and participate in the discussion...but with the social media outlets, I tend to just look and get ideas. I want to work on being a more active participant!

      This chapter also stuck a chord with me. I didn't feel so overwhelmed by an expectation of mastering Twitter in one chapter. I appreciate the discussion on giving and taking. I think a lot of it comes down to where you are in your professional and personal lives. I would agree that with giving you do get more out of the PLN experience as so many have noted. When I discover some new site or resource, I tend to hover and learn it--by taking. In person, like others have commented, I am a giver. That personal connection is more real to me than a virtual one.

  3. I have met teachers like the fourth grade teacher who would not share her lesson plan book. I have always been willing to help teachers who need it and like to share ideas.Sharing ideas with other teachers build relationships where they can share with you.. I don't really like the term stealing ideas but I guess that I do "steal" ideas that i see and read and make them my own. In today's world there are so many online resources and ideas that we can utilize in our classroom and change to make them our own. When I began teaching 26 years ago there were not so many resources. If you were lucky you would have teachers who liked to share ideas. Connected educators are the luckiest because they have an abundance of resources.

    1. I appreciate that you mentioned the idea of building relationships as this is where the 'network' part of a PLN works optimally. After all, a connection should flow two ways--a network multiple directions. You brought out the central dilemma that I am having with this: there have been a lot of changes over the past two or three decades back to a time when a copyright law was expressed at the bottom of everything that we touched. I really didn't know that I was so conflicted about this until I read this chapter!

    2. Sadly, I know too many teachers who will not share ideas/lessons with others. I have seen first year teachers get thrown to the side without any help from others teaching their same grade all due to teacher evaluations. These teachers don't talk to many at school and many would rather not talk to them. These first year teachers had to go and seek out other grade level teachers to receive help. Building relationships with other teachers is a great and beneficial tool. I will do anything and everything to help out first year teachers up to the most senior level teachers. I agree with Janet on the term stealing. I may hear or see things from other teachers and I make them my own. I certainly don't do everything word for word! Lastly, I agree with Janet's last statement....'Connected educators are the luckiest because they have an abundance of resources.' I would like to add that connected educators also allow students to flourish with everything that is available for them!

  4. This chapter mystifies me. Some definitions of taking vs.stealing are intentionally garbled, and is it no wonder that our students are confused about what constitutes cheating vs. 'a little help from a friend'. I could be bamboozled after reading this. Diminished human, personal contact and increased online contact have blurred a lot of the lines because we most often do not have to face the people from whom we 'take' an idea. I am guilty of it, and I justify it because I am not going to be 'profiting' from it, only using it for my students' benefit. When we focus on the 'giving' it balances the 'taking'. I will say that I teach with some very generous colleagues. We freely share the resources we have, and when someone finds an idea that might help another, we pass it along. I see this happening in online professional networks, as well; it is refreshing and energizing yet very much in contrast to other career fields where people depend on ownership of ideas and goods to earn their living.

    1. I believe that in our profession, anything published online is meant to be "taken." People who don't want their ideas to be used would keep them private. I have not put much online, but whenever colleagues ask for my input I am incredibly honored when they use my ideas. I know some people do charge but I think everything else is free for the taking. I hope I didn't just incriminate myself!

    2. I feel exactly the same way about things that teachers share online- as long as that copyright symbol isn't on it. I know the things that I post online are intended to be used by others- I plan to share as much as I take. I also purchase things from Teachers Pay Teachers that aren't free- I pay for those things that people ask me to pay for. I agree with Tammy- this chapter is pretty confusing, as to ownership of ideas and profiting from those ideas to earn a living. That's one reason I never have sold anything of my own on TPT- I honestly don't always remember if someone shared an idea with me or if I came up with it on my own sometimes.

    3. I love what you said about not remembering if you came up with the idea or if someone else did. I'm in that same boat. After teaching for several years, I've looked at countless websites/magazines and I might have changed the idea around some, but most of my lessons were most likely someone else's idea to begin with.

    4. I am very conflicted when it comes to the TPT site and others like it or even personal sites that are for-profit. Yes, the extra money would be great, but...I guess I am old fashioned in the sense that sharing is just what you do when you network at conferences and such. It seems like the for profit end of teaching is toppling the inherent nature of our vocation. I really do not know if i could adjust to a PLN that only operates in cyber space.

  5. I am willing to share lesson plans and resources freely in person and emails (Giving). I have not shared them online -- partly because I'm not comfortable with the process. When others are asking me questions about teaching or concepts, I immediately go online and search for the information or resources: Anchor Charts (Pinterest) and lesson plans for books or concepts (Taking). Then, I turn around and provide the information and websites with others (Giving). When planning lessons for my classroom, I look for ideas online - better ways to teach the concepts and I use the useful part or make them over.

    I spend more time looking for great ways to teach, and I freely share them with my 3rd grade team.

    So I take resources online and give them to my 3rd grade team. I need to work on
    my sharing online. Since beginning reading What Connected Educators Do Differently, I have started checking my Twitter account daily and started looking for resources to share on it or entering a tweet. I have connected to Google Classroom - It reminded me of Twitter.     I use Facebook daily. It only took my teacher friend four years to be me to try Facebook. I'm going to encourage my 3rd grade team to get connected on Twitter. Right now, we use email for this.

  6. I have found several useful ideas via Twitter sharing, and I plan to share those ideas with the members of my department. We share lesson plans, quizzes, tests, and other ideas all the time, but it gets frustrating when others don't reciprocate. Sharing via Twitter, Google Classroom, and Facebook will be encouraged strongly this year - I just have to get the rest of my department on board. I love that we are all sharing our PLNs, favorite books about education, and other ideas through this whole connected process. I hope that all of this pays off in the end with my students. I think that I am very much a taker, but I am also a giver - although I don't always think my ideas have the merit they need to be shared via Twitter. I guess I should rethink this, try it, and see what happens.

  7. I find I search online for ideas to make my classroom better. I find the ideas and then try to enhance them to fit my specific needs. I am always willing to share information but I tend to do that only when asked in person or through email. I'm not always comfortable with putting my information online. I am always so thankful for the teachers who are willing to put the ideas online to share with everyone. I have also noticed some teachers less willing to share since the new evaluation system has gone into place. As well as some teachers who want to drive the direction of all the classrooms in their respective departments. What works or fails for one teacher may be a different experience for another.

    1. I am also thankful for teachers who are willing to share and explain how they teach different concepts. By comparing how different teachers teach a concept, it makes it easier to differentiate instruction by using different teachers' strategies. This year I found Math Talk ideas. I was super excited to find a way to get students to discuss math with a partner and find different ways to problem solve. I found the Math Talk on Pinterest, which took me to Teachers Pay Teachers - Teachers selling their product. I'm thankful for those teachers will to sell ready made items.

      I know of some teachers who have gone a little overboard with the selling, to the extent that it interferes with their day job: teaching. They are so obsessed with driving traffic to their TPT pages that they don't get some of the basics done.

  8. I went to the CLASS conference in Noblesville last week and it was so nice to be face to face with so many wonderful educators. I love the CLASS staff and all the ideas they "gave" us. There was a sense of encouragement and faith in us. They taught us new ways to teach but also took time to affirm that we are GREAT educators who already know so much! There was lots of giving and taking! It is fun to hear/see how other classrooms work.

  9. I think that it's easy to be a taker. We have so many places to get information and ideas these days! I've been spending the morning "pinterest-ing", looking for ideas about my school theme for next year, classroom organization, guided reading.... Clicking on the links took me to websites, blogs, and articles galore. Being a giver demands that you are connected, and have ways to share what you know (twitter, facebook, a personal blog or another digital avenue of sharing.) I sporadically share what happens in my classroom on a classroom blog, but not too many people see it! :) I will try to use twitter to share, and hopefully balance my giving and taking this school year.

  10. I know that I am a good taker and I hope that I am becoming a better giver! Stealing ideas is important and also important to share with others what has worked for you and what makes you excited! Twitter is perfect for this. A little tweet and a link seems easy enough to do so you can be a better giver. The professional people I am now following (because of reading this book) are doing this all the time. I do need to believe that I have something worth sharing before I put it out there but that will only happen if I start trying! Pinterest boards are another way to give- by keeping your board public and letting others see what you have found. I can find information as a taker in so many places! The balance is what I am after. Looking forward to the chat!!

  14. I like to connect and share with the list serve that Indiana has for school counsellors, often can get good information there.
    Pinterest is another favorite. Seems like the point of Pinterest is to share so others can take to use.

    I was reminded of an 'old-school' resource while at a conference last week. The Indiana Youth Institute has a large lending library. They will mail you the books you want along with a postage paid envelope. They also said they have some books but I have not made time to explore that yet.

  15. I definitely am a taker. I use what I can and adapt it. While I don't turn around and "give" back online and via social media, I definitely share and share openly with colleagues. It's not uncommon that I find things that might work for others and email it to them or copy them extra when I'm making copies of something just in case they would like to share it. I figure that if someone posts it online, they want me and others to use it and their students to benefit from it.

  16. I think I was a taker until I joined a Twitter chat and saw my ideas being favorited or retweeted. It gave me the confidence to share what I was doing to help someone else. I now post in chats and tweets for the purpose of being a giver- I spend more time posting for others' benefit than I do searching for information to help me as a teacher. That being said, I join discussions like this to help me be a better teacher. Sometimes, it's easy to be giving and giving and to stop searching for improvements in myself- so I'm trying to find that magic balance of giving and taking. I love Twitter- it's helped me have a PLN from all over the world, which has enriched my classroom practice SO much- the communities I interact with seem to be freely giving away advice and ideas like Halloween candy, lol! I hope that I am also able to give back to them- that's something I need to focus on more this next school year (I've not been as involved in my Twitter chats as I was at first- need to get back in the habit instead of popping in for just a few minutes until I get a new idea then popping out). Pinterest is good too- but I'm more of a Twitter gal. (Pinterest seems to suck me in, pinning away, but then I forget to go back and use what I pinned!)

  21. At this point, I am still a 'taker' regarding social media. I enjoy reading things, but do not post much. I guess I am just not comfortable and am not sure why? I know I need to work on getting more engaged. I may not offer up advice, but if someone asks me, I am more than willing to share. For example, if one of my colleagues asked to see my lessons or needs help planning, I love to help and share. I guess maybe I don't offer because I don't want to seem pushy? But I like to help...I need to open up and put myself out there more to grow.

  22. I think it is important for educators to take on both the giver and the taker role. For me personally, I find myself being a bit of both...yet during different seasons I am probably either one or another. For example, towards the beginning of school when I am preparing my classroom, researching new ideas, starting to develop the themes and lessons for the year and so on, I am more of a taker. Yet once I am more settled in my classroom and my students know more of the routines I am more of a giver. I find I have more time to give then and contribute to others.
    On page 46 of the book the authors write "Connected educators seem to possess this trait to an even more pronounced extent: the more they receive through their professional connections, the more they want to give-and the more they want to connect their colleagues to a similar network of people who are willing to support them regardless of their role in education, their location, or their current comfort level with reaching out to those beyond their immediate grasp to grow and learn." Through my experiences in teaching I have found the above to be very true not only in my own life but in the lives of many educators I know. When we take the time to share what we know with others or encourage a fellow colleague to try out different PLNs that might answer their questions, we tend to be encouraged and our fellow educators hopefully will be the same.
    I have also learned that when I find a great PLN or a new website (or so on) that has been particularly helpful to my career, I tend to WANT to share that with other educators. I am very much an advocate for helping those around me save time or resources whenever possible. It is not about looking out for ourselves...focusing only on OUR classroom or on OUR teaching style. It should be about doing what is best for the students and families we serve. Teaching should be more of a team effort...not about tooting our own horns. Teaching in and of itself is about others. We need to be willing to do our part as both givers and takers...even if at certain times we are more one than that other.

  23. At first I thought I was more of a taker. In my department we share a lot of ideas. Being a newer teacher my colleagues were more than willing to give me information, assignments, and websites to check out. However, when it came down to it I found myself modifying assignments to fit my students needs along with offering my own ideas. Often times my department head or other members of my department were using my ideas and loving them. This of course all took place in a personal professional setting. I just recently revisited using Twitter and I am definitely going to try to balance my give and take.

    I recently met with some of my colleagues and I told them about this book and what I am learning. We have decided to try to integrate more technology and social media in our Freshman Academy next year. This is where I hope to become more of a giver than a taker.

    1. When I was first starting my career in teaching, I was in a very similar situation to you. I received a lot of helpful advice and lesson plans but they weren't exactly what I pictured myself doing in my own classroom. I believe I was more willing to share how I "tweeked" the idea with these teachers because they were initially helpful to me. Without the balance of giving and taking, more educators are probably going to more likely just to take from others.

    2. I will be starting my third year of teaching so like you people are very open to sharing things with me to help me get going! I really haven't been much of a giver yet...mainly because I feel I lack the confidence around more experienced teachers. However, being a younger teacher does have its advantages because we are able to adjust and throw out ideas that can incorporate technology, etc and many teachers what a newer/younger input because we can relate!

      I really hope to become more of a giver as I gain more experience because I always feel guilty taking (even though this chapter reiterates that it IS OKAY!)

  24. I am definitely more a taker. As a teacher of a non-traditional language, I have always found that resources geared specifically toward my area are in short supply. This has turned me into a stealer (I prefer the term adapter) par excellence! I enjoy the semi-creativity of taking an existing idea/material and reshaping it to my own needs.

  25. I am a giver, finder, taker and stealer. I consider myself a giver and taker more. It seems that I always run across something that I think others could use. I share with them (mainly through email, occasionally on Twitter…but mostly on Pinterest). Most colleagues appreciate the find and others probably hit the delete button.
    I am a finder and taker on Pinterest, and of course share these finds on my boards where others may see them. There are so many resources already ready to be used, or ready to be tweaked by educators. TpT is another way that I “take” items. Some educators offer free items and others offer their products for a nominal fee. Some of the items I use “as is “ but others are tweaked for my classroom use.
    The world of teaching is quite different than when I started teaching thirty years ago. I had a book, a few filmstrips and some dittos left from the two previous teachers. I produced most other items to be used in the classroom. Today, all I have to do is enter a search and boom…I have tons of resources…sometimes too many!

    6. I have received countless ideas and activities that Sandy finds as she is doing her own online searches for Spanish. It is always nice to be thought of, and I appreciate that you send me things. I wish I could use them all; never enough time. I have saved and used several. I teach in a building full of givers, and the feeling of collaboration and cooperation are at their peak under our current administrators as we are poised to begin our fourth year being a 1:1 building. My building didn't always have this kind of leadership or cooperative spirit.

  26. I think I am both a giver and taker because in this age of so many resources I think my philosophy on garnering and sharing ideas is "work smarter, not harder".

    I love taking ideas from Pinterest, Facebook, blogs, and TPT and tweaking them to fit my classroom needs. I am thankful for those who are willing to put their ideas out there for the taking.

    I find myself being more of a giver of ideas to my building colleagues because I feel more comfortable in the putting myself out there to consider best practices including and using technology because I've had success doing it in my classroom. I like to personally share in that way because you've got to start somewhere.

    With my PLN on Twittter I feel that I'm more of a taker than a giver. I feel that more of my giving comes through the chats that I participate in, but I'm still in the beginning of this process. There is always room to grow!

    1. I need your philosophy on "work smarter, not harder". I am a perfectionist at heart and find myself not liking a lot of information on the Internet. I also appreciate the work from other educators who put their lesson ideas on Pinterest, TPT, ect. It often is that starting point for me to adapt for my own individual classroom.

  27. When I begun my career in teaching, I definitely was more of a taker. Stole as many lesson ideas as I could from colleagues, the internet, textbooks, etc. I lacked the confidence to create my own ideas. Thankfully the people around me were more than willing to help me with any struggles that I came across.

    Now, I hope that I have a balance between being a giver and a taker. There is only one other teacher in my department and I have been willing to give her ideas for her classroom. However, her teaching style is vastly different than mine so it does not always translate when I give or take with/from her. Like the book mentions, there are certain teachers who are comfortable in their own ways and are not considered a "connected educator".

    My PLN includes a FACS teacher listserve where I get the opportunity to not only ask for help from other teachers but also give ideas out there too. I appreciate the advice and expertise that I receive from them. Likewise, I am also grateful for Pinterest. When I find something cool on the internet, I am not only pinning this for myself to find later but also for the teachers who follow me too. I am looking forward to developing my PLN on Twitter to get these same benefits for the future.

  28. I am both a giver and a taker. Yes, as a beginning teacher I was looking for ideas that would fit into the building I was working in. I love to hear what other teachers are doing and tweak it to work for me. Econferences are fun to go to and learn new technology ideas to use in the classroom. Being a gym teacher my uses of technology are limited because of budget limits. But I bring the new ideas back to the school and share it with the staff.

  29. I was more of a taker until I did the "Slice of Life Challenge" on the TwoWritingTeachers Blog. Because I was challenged to write and post every day for 31 days and comment to someone every day, I met new people and loved the sharing. I found out that I had quite a lot to say and to share. Giving and taking is always the best combination in any relationship. You don't grow much as a "taker." This summer I am participating in 4 online book studies. I am giving and taking. D :)

    1. I'm glad to hear that once you got started you found that you had a lot to say and offer to others. This continues to be my problem, I don't really feel as though I have much to offer to others. I do much better "given" in person in my own school setting rather than online. I am a little concerned as my colleague that I worked the closest with for the past several years isn't going to be in my building this year so I hope that I am still able to give and take with the other teacher in my department (this hasn't really been the case previously). However, this may just force me to turn to social media more in order to collaborate!

  30. I am both a giver and taker, but I tend to lean more toward giving. I love being able to share ideas with my coworkers and other teachers around the world. I use Twitter very often to see what other teachers are doing in their classrooms. It is an inspiration to see all of the wonderful things happening in classrooms all over the place. I love the idea of stealing ideas to making them fit my own curriculum and class. I feel like I do this often. I see a good idea and change it up some to make it my own.

  31. I am definitely a taker from my virtual community but I love to give to people I see in person. I think I don't yet have enough confidence to put ideas out there for people I've never even met. People who ask me in person obviously think I have something worth sharing so I feel a little better about promoting my ideas. I guess I just have to be brave enough to put my ideas out there in a PLN and be willing to take feedback, both good and bad. I'm sure people can improve on my ideas and help me in return!

  32. It's easier and safer to be a "taker" when we're new to things, teaching in general, a specific grade level, or Twitter. However, being connected means we become more comfortable and willing to begin "giving." It's important to realize that EVERYONE (yes, you!) has something valuable and important to share in the education conversation, and to share those ideas and gifts we all have to improve education! I know many teachers who feel they couldn't possibly know enough, be expert enough, or be a good enough/speaker/writer to share with the world--and nothing could be farther from the truth! If you are willing to participate in a summer book study, you are exactly the type of educator who SHOULD be sharing! It can be scary at first, but it is well worth it!

    I have become much more connected in the last year, thanks mostly to Twitter! Yes, it does take time, but I am a better teacher and will eventually be a better administrator because I have fellow educators across the state, the country, and the world who will help me if I'm investigating something new, will help me tweak an idea, and, most importantly, encorage, support, and stretch me to be the best educator I can be!

    I "steal" great ideas from my PLN all the time, but I try to give credit to whoever gave me the idea in a Tweet or a blog post to support that person. Crowdsourcing ideas, adapting them to fit the needs of our schools and students truly gives us power to grow and make positive changes! If I only had my own ideas, or even the ideas from the teachers in my own building, I wouldn't have half of my good ideas or be half the teacher I am because of my PLN!

    I give much more now that I am comfortable with social media and have established connections. I share ideas on several Twitter chats a week, tweet pictures of projects in my classroom, and I try to blog regularly about my ideas for education. I know that this way I am giving my PLN some ideas to work with, and giving back to them for all of their sharing!

    1. Great post, Chantell! I've been in education since 1973 and years before that if you count the times I played school and visited it my mother's classrooms. I remember when teaches worked hard to have the cutest bulletin board and "crafts" hanging from the ceiling in their classrooms. There was a sense of being the BEST when the classroom looked super cute and clever. No more is there the emphasis on interior design. ;) Now we collaborate with our peers, to be a team that has student achievement as the goal and to have a collaborative classroom where students have collaborative discussions and have ownership over their own learning. Even with all the pressures in education today, it's still the place I want to grow and learn. Never before have we had so many opportunities for PD. Just a click away. D :)

  33. I find myself to be a little of both a giver and taker. I think I probably take much more than I give from the virtual world but I do try to contribute. It is just so easy most of the times to find a grat idea and use it in class. I follow many history and television production people. I have found however that just like we tell the students you must be sure to verify sources to insure the information is correct.

  34. I find it difficult to find that balance between giver and taker. I am much more a taker online and a giver in person. I use many online resources to get ideas, which I often tweak for my own class room needs. There is so much out there that is great that it can get a little overwhelming! I still love a face to face conversation where ideas are exchanged with my colleagues. I think seeing their enthusiasm for an idea/lab/lesson/etc. makes me even more excited to use that idea. I am also way more likely and comfortable giving ideas and sharing what I have done in person than I am through social media.

    I need to work on that balance and after reading the book and viewing everyone's comments I know the best way to be more of a giver online is to practice it!

I am putting things on my school calendar to do this school year with my staff. I think that being connected with other professionals will help me be a better leader in my building.

  36. I am neither a giver or taker, but would like to be. Would very much like to participate in life sessions, but with an alarm going off at 3:00 in the morning, I am not worth much in an 8:00 or 9:00 chat! As I enter my third year of the coaching position, I realize that this job is unique depending on each teacher's needs, building leadership, personalities, expectations...not sure who I would follow or share with anyway!

Being new to PLN’s online with twitter, I can say I am definitely a “taker.” There are so many great ideas out there that it is really easily (and fun) to take them and plan how you are going to use them in your classroom. I know I need to get better at sharing the ideas that I find with my twitter followers. I’m always finding ideas on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and other Music Teacher Blogs. I just need to take a little extra time and share these ideas with my PLN. This will be a goal of mine!
    With my wonderful group of Related Art Teachers we are very good at being “takers” and “givers.” When we have our weekly PLC meetings we are always exchanging new ideas for our classrooms. It can be difficult to find the balance of being a “taker” and a “giver,” but I know I can do it! I am looking forward to doing a #INeLearn Twitter chat!

  38. I am definitely more of a taker. I use the National Association of Agricultural Educators "Communities of Practice" site a lot to find project ideas, resources, etc. Of course, I would not be able to utilize these sources if others were not being givers. I have posted a few things in hopes of helping others out, but my taking definitely outweighs my giving.

    Regarding Twitter, I do retweet a lot of things regarding the agricultural industry. I don't often retweet and promote other educators that I follow. Looking at it this way, I would like for people to promote my tweets, so I guess I should start promoting their tweets.

  39. As a teacher of visual arts, I was taught to keep my ideas private and once artistically rendered they were my property--so giving was not normal. The world, in my opinion, has a problem with violations of copyright and plagarism, so I don't normally publish my artwork. Most people don't realize that the U.S. has automatic copyright for any artist's work, and ideas are stolen constantly, and for other people's profit. This bothers me. I like to share what I see online, but I don't use it for monetary profit. If art ideas are posted, I will use them to benefit my students. I try to put my own spin on it whenever possible. The internet has allowed much to be shared and I feel I am more in the giver category, two-thirds compared to one-third taker. With more involvement on Twitter this may change since I am finding all sorts of great ideas out there in my P2LN.

  40. I am more of a taker when it comes to getting ideas online but I'm more of a giver with my coworkers. I find an abundance of great lessons and ideas for my classroom through reading blogs, pinterest, TPT, and Twitter. Then I take(steal) those ideas and make them my own. I also share the ideas with my colleagues whom I coplan/teach with on a daily basis. So I feel I have a good balance but not when it comes to just the social media side of things. My goal is to set aside time a couple nights a week to give as well as take ideas from Twitter chats. I have been doing better with this but it is tough with finding time in the day for everything so that's why I'm starting with a couple days and maybe be able to grow from there. I know the book talked about how connected educators have the same amount of time during the day as everyone else, but if you are parents and have families, your time is definitely limited after school hours. With everything else in life, it's finding that balance.

  41. I would classify myself as a giver... And even a distributor. There are people in the corporation that will forward info (links, best practices, resources, etc) and I forward them to the entire staff or certain groups. I also post to social media sites to get the word out there. I am thoroughly enjoying this book and reading all the input by all of the members of this group. The "Follow 5, Find 5, Take 5" segment at the end of each chapter is wonderful.

  42. I am still getting the hang of Twitter, but I definitely feel like I am more of a taker at this point. I am working on becoming more of a giver. I do try to favorite things that people tweet that I really like or retweet them but I haven't came up with much of just my own intelligent insights. Maybe I just haven't had any yet? Ha ha ha! I think it's easy to start out as a taker and work into being a giver as your confidence grows in your ability to tweet.

  43. I enjoyed the INeLearn Chat! It was my first attempt and I do see how this is a great resource. I am still figuring it all out! I tried to retweet, respond to tweets etc. It was sometimes hard to keep up or know if my tweet happened because I would not see it posted all the time. I feel like I was able to be a giver (a little bit) and a taker. It was exciting when someone commented on my tweet or retweeted. Thanks for the opportunity to get started!   44. I am 100% a "taker" at this point on social media. However, within my own building/ department I believe that I am more of a "giver". I am able to give more in a face-to-face relationship then I am on social media. Even though I have taught special education for 14 years, I still feel like I don't really have much to offer to others. I think that once I find some other special ed teachers to follow on Twitter that I will probably feel more confident to give to them. I do really enjoy the give and take of working closely with others in my department.

  45. I think I am currently a taker and a sharer. I do read a lot of tweets and explore their suggestions. I also retweet and favorite things I want to share with others. I think as I gain confidence that my ideas might be valuable to others I will gain confidence to tweet myself. I just got back from the Model Schools Conference in Atlanta and upped my tweeting game. I am continuing to work on it!

  46. I am more of a giver in person. I like attending conferences and workshops to learn and share. When it comes to technology I tend to take by reading and give by retweeting. I read somewhere that some of us feel like posers when recognized, and that expresses the feeling I had the first time one of the highly connected tech people asked to follow me. I wondered what I had to offer. I regularly tweak lessons, worksheets, and ideas to make them my own, so I guess I steal along with the best of you.

  47. I feel I am both a giver and a taker. I like the quote on page 46 that stated, "those who enter the education profession are likely to possess a giving nature and entered the profession in part to give back." When I first started teaching I often felt like I was stealing if I copied a bulletin board or teaching technique. Now I feel with Pinterest, TPT, and everything on the web, we must find the best ways to reach our students and all of these ideas are there for the taking.

    I also feel since I am an older teacher, I also tell the new teachers please come to me before you buy any Math manipulatives, ECT... I may have it and you are welcome to use it!

    I am new to many kinds of social media, esp. Twitter. I have watched several Twitter chats on Thursday nights. I mainly just watch and do not Tweet.

    I have also watched several Webinars this Summer and I am much more verbal during these since I am more familiar with them. I am always best though face to face!

  49. At this time in my PLN, I am more of a taker than a giver. I actually just messaged a new member of my PLN regarding this issue. He responded that "You are doing all the right things, and like me, you should be "taking" as much as you can. I wouldn't worry too much about contributing. My contributions tend to come in fits and spurts and often are reactions to something I've read."
    He continued, "With Twitter, when you do tweet, sometimes it's a good idea to tweet at someone or a group. Sometimes you'll get a person with tons of followers at just the right time and you'll get retweeted."
    Since then I have even gotten a bit more confidence in posting questions to a couple facebook groups I participate in. I am still working on posting on Twitter and learning what I want to retweet.

    I have somewhat been a giver in other ways participating in presenting at conferences that I love to share what I have learned. Speaking of.....anyone interested in coming to our state science conference in February and co-presenting "Developing your PLN"???

  50. I think that online I'm more of a taker. I search a lot online for ideas to use in the classroom. I often change the ideas to fit my needs, but I don't post many ideas online. I do post or share some on facebook with other teachers that I am friends with. I am a giver when it comes to sharing with my fellow teachers in our building. I'm always happy to share an idea or help in any way that I can. I think through reading this book it has opened my eyes more in how to share online through blogging or Twitter.

  51. I think I am more of a taker. I spend lots of time online looking at what others are doing and seeing if I can adopt what they are doing to my lessons. I am a giver to other teachers in my building. I often share what I have found to other teachers. I found this quote by George Couros the other day:
    "What if...every teacher tweeted one thing a day that they did in their classroom to a school hashtag, and they took five minutes out of their day to read each other's tweets?
    What impact would that have on learning and school culture?"

  52. When it comes to online ideas, I am much more of a taker. I spend a lot time looking online for new ideas or ways to make the concepts I'm teaching better. Since Twitter is basically new to me, I am definitely a taker right now as I am becoming more comfortable with utilizing the PLN available. However, I have become frustrated because I feel like I need to read all of the tweets which is very time consuming. I don't want to miss anything, but I need to realize this isn't going to be possible especially when I go back to work.

    I do a much better job giving to those in my building. I think our team is actually great about sharing new ideas, planning together, and helping each other. It's very rewarding when we can work together to benefit our students.

  53. When it comes to sharing and receiving ideas and tools online, I definitely believe that I am more of a taker. I struggle with the creativity necessary to come up with good ideas especially in the special education classes I teach where I have no curriculum. Everything I teach has to be created by myself, so I often go online to try to find project ideas to help make my students' learning more hands on and interesting. I have occasionally created projects that I think could be useful to others who teacher similar classes to my own, the struggle is that what I teach isn't very common at the high school level, so I'm not sure who I would share my ideas with that could benefit from it. I suppose getting connected with other educators through a system like Twitter would make it possible for me to connect with other educators who might benefit from my ideas and might have even more ideas that I could use in my own classroom. I am actually switching jobs this fall, moving from high school to elementary school, and so it will be a new learning experience for me to see what I will be teaching next. I know for sure it will be completely different from what I have taught the past two years. Maybe with this change, this is a good time for me to look into Twitter and get connected with other elementary special education teachers. It is an area that I haven't really had any experience in previously, and I can see a lot of value from being able to discuss ideas with others who do have experience in this area.

  54. Professionally, I am more of a "taker" but I am starting to stretch my wings a bit with social media. This year, I posted some of my personal scrapbook pages on Pinterest and just this summer I started a scrabooking website with Weebly. I have not yet posted anything on the site but that is my next step. I am hoping that as I gain confidence with social media that it will cover over into sharing ideas and lessons with fellow educators.

  56. I am both a giver and a taker within my building. One of the best things about the school where I work and the department in which I teach is our willingness to share with each other. I have had the blessing of colleagues who have been excellent mentors and have always been willing to share. I have also had the opportunity to give back by being the mentor and being the person willing to share. Co-teaching experiences and helping new colleagues has been fun and helped me become a better teacher in my own right.

    As far as online situations go, I am definitely only a taker. I am constantly online looking for new ideas and approaches; however, I have never contributed any of my own ideas. This book has inspired me to get connected on Twitter, but so far my adventures have been confined to my local friends, family, and colleagues. As I get more comfortable, I definitely plan to start developing my own PLN and branching out more.

  58. I feel that I am both a giver and a taker. I do tend to lean more towards the taker side though . I am constantly looking for new strategies and activities to use with my students. However, if I find resources that I feel are great, or that work well, I am always willing to share with others. In our grade level, I am fortunate that we all share things willingly with one another.

    I am definitely a taker. I try to be a giver, and even in my building, but it's sometimes complicated. I never know why people don't share at school. We are all there to help kids and give them tools to become better learners. Why people wouldn't want to help others, I don't know.

    On social media, I try to share, but there is so much out there, I feel that I end up being a taker.

  60. For many years I was In a 1person department so I did a lot of taking and modifying. Our FACS list serve is amazing. Since I am not extremely tech savvy I found it difficult to reciprocate and rarely shared. I recently moved into a 3 person department and have some great coworkers who are so helpful and we share well with each other. They are also very capable with technology and have helped me to become more comfortable with putting my thoughts and ideas out there.

  61. I am certainly a taker at this point as far as online sharing is concerned! There are so many resources and ideas available that it is so easy to find new things to implement or tweak to use in my classroom. Since this will be my second year teaching high school, I hope that I can start to share successful ideas and activities from my classroom to help inspire others! My only concern is that I do not feel that many of my ideas are share worthy yet! #teachinginsecurities!!

  62. I would say that I am a combination of a giver and a taker. I am more of a giver while working face to face with people, but when I am researching online, I am more of a taker. And even though I can be a taker, I always to make the ideas mine. I am a giver in a way that I take the ideas, make them my own and share them (giving credit to the original idea) in hopes of people making it their own as well. I also use TpT, Pinterest, FB, Twitter and blogs to help with ideas for my classroom. Though I probably use Twitter more for educational reading to help myself become a better teacher, Edutopia and Scholastic are a couple of my favorites.

    I am looking forward to working on being able to share more of my own ideas online this year. I know the starting of my blog and my team will help me with that.

    Also, I do love that in this chapter they say over and over again, “it’s okay that you don’t know everything.” And that giving and taking are a never-ending circle, and it’s great when the circle gets bigger and bigger the more people you add to your PLN.

  63. I believe that I am both a giver and a taker/stealer, depending on the context. When I first started teaching, I was ALL about the taking, and rightly so as a novice. Five years into this profession I often find myself collaborating, sharing ideas, and definitely giving more than when I first started teaching. I LOVE the concept of stealing because I use it with my colleagues all the time. I love taking a lesson idea from another teacher or context area and making it my own! It’s a really fun and creative process for me!

  65. I would have to say I am a taker. One of my colleagues is great about finding new things on the internet and she shares those ideas with our Algebra I team. We have taken many ideas and then tweaked them to fit with our students. I had a student teacher in the spring and she showed me some of her favorite sites.

  72. If I had to look at all of my activity in cyberspace, I would definitely consider myself a taker. I love finding ideas to jump start something new on which I am working. In person, on a day to day basis or when I am at conferences, I am a giver. I think I have the potential to be a giver with social media, but I am also reserved as is Laura about appropriate postings, security, privacy, etc...Hopefully, with a cyber PLN, I will one day be able to duplicate the giver aspect that I demonstrate in live face to face interaction.

  73. I definitely agree with the book: the majority of us are givers. That's one of the greatest things about Twitter: we all WANT to be there, we all WANT to share/learn.

    I believe in the past year, I have been more of a taker. Mainly because I just finished my 2nd year ever teaching, so I wasn't sure what I could give. Or if I could give, I was sure someone else out there already knew it or could give better information than I could. Now, however, I believe I am starting to give more than I take. This may not be seen solely on Twitter, but I am beginning to present on topics such as Twitter, Genius Hour, etc.

    My goal this year is to give more on Twitter. I plan to implement one of the Take 5's from this chapter about posting 3 things each day on the same topic, but a different topic each day for a week. I think I am going to start this the week before school so I can make sort of an appendix from my summer learning.

  74. Wow, what a great chapter this was! Throughout my career, I have come across some teachers who don't really "share" or collaborate, and I have definitely experienced teachers who will share anything that they have in order to help another teacher grow/develop. It's always been interesting to me when I have experienced a teacher who won't really share because most educators are giving in nature, and I think it's so important to help each other out (without being taken advantage of) because it benefits our students in the long run. As a teacher, I have had seasons of giving and seasons of taking. Currently, I am taking and stealing ideas as I am starting my third year in a new personalized learning program at my school. Once I become more comfortable with my content, I will want to share and help others develop ideas. I love brainstorming with my colleagues and very much value the development of new teaching ideas for not only myself but other educators as well. It is absolutely awesome when you either develop an amazing idea, project, lesson, etc. for your classroom or see it develop for another colleague, and this is one of my favorite parts of teaching. My goal is to have a good balance between sharing and taking. Anyone who has experienced a constant taker in the workforce becomes resentful of that person; however, withholding information and being stingy about it is never healthy for a work environment and creates negativity and tension. In addition, I think it's important to consider ideas from other teachers outside your content area and grade level. Even though I am a high school teacher, some of my best ideas have come from an elementary teacher's idea that I was able to adapt and mold into something relevant for my students. I have also greatly benefited from collaborating with a math and science teacher because they had a different perspective that I found invaluable. There are so many amazing resources available to educators as a result of social media, the Internet, etc., and even though it can sometimes be overwhelming sifting through these resources, I am extremely grateful that I am teaching in an era where these sources are readily available!

  75. Interesting…I think I am both a giver and a taker! When it comes to sharing books and ideas with my teammates and peers, I am a giver. When it comes to using technology to connect and share I am a taker. I love to follow and read and watch what is going on…but I have been afraid to jump in. At the beginning of the book study, I was dipping my toes in the water and giving twitter a try…I had a purpose and it worked and I enjoyed it. But as the summer has gone on, I have pulled back and started watching and taking again. My hope is that once we are back into the swing of things at school, I will leap in with my kids to get things up and running with classroom pages for Facebook and Tweets for parents. Fingers crossed that I will find a happy medium and make it all work.

  76. I am mixed. I am a giver when it comes to Facebook & a receiver when it comes to Twitter & Pinterest. My Facebook page is more for family & I always have something to share about my family etc. Twitter I get a lot of awesome ideas, but I just read & read & never post. I want to try and do better. I guess I am just nervous. I am hoping to attend the chat:) I can't wait to keep learning more about this technology world we live in.

  77. I definitely classify myself as a taker in conferring with my colleagues and hen conversing with my PLN. Being a first year teacher, I lack experience dealing with colleagues, students; and with creative teaching ideas. I find myself feeling nervous to put myself out there because of the expertise of other educators. I see the importance of giving as well as taking and am anxious to be on both sides of the spectrum. I do certainly appreciate the ideas others are willing to share.

  78. I strive to be a giver and a taker. The term matcher was new, and sometimes I am that, too. The older I get, the less I am conflicted about "stealing" materials. I think a real shift has occurred in our profession. Collaboration is no longer a suggestion, it is an expectation. Along with collaboration, teachers share work with one another. Cheating was a topic of high emotion and drama around my tenth year of teaching. "The students are cheating from one another!" was the concern of teachers. As our profession has evolved, the cheating concern returned when we first started eLearning days with our 1:1 computers. The administrative answer we heard was we should be developing more in-depth lessons in which students created products instead of so many one right answer assignments. Teachers like to work together for the the most part; students like to work together too. I worry less about this than I ever have. In the end, a student who isn't putting in time and effort to learn will shortchange himself in the long run. These habits tend to reveal themselves in time.

    I hope my colleagues feel comfortable asking me for anything I know or have that can help them. Last year my corporation decided not to adopt textbooks, and I felt we were highly encouraged to "steal" ideas, lesson plans, and materials from the Internet. Last summer I attended a session about copyright laws at our Wise Conference. This is an area that is changing from previous decades. Even though I know copyright laws exist, I think most educators would regard another teacher taking an idea, a lesson plan, or a worksheet as imitation as the sincerest form of flattery.

    My ability to be a giver on social media is evolving. I need to become more proficient on Twitter and share more. I have learned to share on my school's Facebook page. Tonight I posted a photo and brief caption on our school's FB, and it has been viewed almost 500 times in just a few hours. The coach doesn't add to the school FB page which mystifies me since he is computer literate. I want to explore giving on Twitter more as I add one new skill this month. If a teacher doesn't want someone to "steal" their idea, I think they should sell it on TeachersPayTeachers or write a book on the topic. People know they may purchase the expertise in those formats. If the same information is posted to the Internet or social media sites, I consider that it is fair game for anyone who might find it. I have to say I love when someone uses one of my ideas whether other people know it or not. I know it, and this knowledge gives me confidence and satisfaction that I created something worthwhile. To live on through what I have created during my working years is the best way to leave a mark on my school, my corporation, and hopefully, the good of the students that I can contemplate.

  79. I am totally a taker at this point. Teacher Pay Teacher, Pinterest, Facebook, etc. I love to find ideas that are new and try them out. I do not post much with technology. I share my ideas with Colleagues at my school, but probably not much outside of there. Seems like my time is used teaching, planning, and being a wife/mom outside of school time. Maybe as my young children get older I'll be more of a giver. Right now I appreciate all the work others have done to help me balance!

  80. In reference to social media, I really feel like I am more of a taker than a giver. Which sounds bad as an educator! We are supposed to be the ones that have more of a giving personality, but in this case, it is different. Social media has definitely exposed me to much more interesting ideas and activities. Pinterest is a HUGE site to find wonderful new ideas and creative ways to reach your students. I share ideas at school, but have never thought about sharing on pinterest or teacher pay teacher. Maybe I should...I could make some extra $ that way!!! I am sure as I get older and my child gets older, I will more naturally turn in to giver, rather than a taker....
