Chater 7: Passion

This week's habitude is passion. Have you found a way in your busy schedule to give kids time to work on things they're passionate about? Are you getting to teach anything that you're passionate about?

  1. Ironically, I am planning on employing "Google's 20 Percent Rule," this year. I had the honor of listening to Milton Chen at the Summer of eLearning Conference in Warsaw last week. He spoke about the "Independent Project," which was instituted based on Google's rule. The whole concept is providing students an opportunity to drive their own learning around something that they are truly passionate about. This chapter on passion, is exactly the format on which this project was based upon. We're so tied to standards and objectives- and being the center of the learning- that we never really ask ourselves if we are truly helping students discover and work on things they are truly good at and interested in learning about. This is one of my new plans for this year.

    I'm passionate about technology; I am fortunate to be part of a 1:1 to school, which enables me to share my passion for learning utilizing technology in the language arts classroom. Additionally, I love writing, and I plan to continue to share my passion for writing and blogging with my students. My goal is to provide more opportunities for authentic audiences for students as they produce and express themselves through writing and blogging. My hope is to prepare students for life and encourage passion for learning and life.

  2. I'm passionate about technology and about student success- about using best practice and brain research with technology to help kids succeed. And I love Social Studies- so every day is about my passion! Besides the classroom, I love genealogy and music- so I try to combine stories from my family history and as much music as possible into my class. I also am a passionate Purdue fan, so behind my desk in my "happy spot" is a huge bulletin board with a montage of Purdue posters just for me! :-)

    I am thinking about the "genius hour" or 20% time idea. I may start experimenting with it in my advanced class. I like the idea- just not sure how to make it work for me. I love the "Pitch for Passion" section of the chapter- I want to show that to the kids and talk to them about how important it is to develop a passion for life and learning- not just getting by. So many kids seem to only lack passion- they come from a world where it's tough just to survive. I want to inspire them, give them hope, and lift them up through finding SOMETHING that they can be passionate about and contribute to the world.

  3. I truly believe passion is essential to our students and to us as educators. I really appreciate Angela Maiers’s letter in which she talks about how we as educators are finding our passions take a back seat to all of the new mandates and requirements. It is important to refocus ourselves on our passion; why we are working with children to begin with. I am extremely passionate about young children. I want them to feel safe, loved, and protected during the hours they are at school. Actually, I would like this for them all of the time, but school is where we have control over that. I’m passionate about early literacy and helping children learn to LOVE reading. I’m so hungry for all of the new research about how children learn to read. I feel like my passions truly drive my life and my work.

  4. Passion is what we all have......we teach. We want the students to learn, to achieve and to enjoy everyday. Nothing feels better than to hear a student say, "Class is over??? That went fast." There are times that it seems like the perseverance isn't enough but it is the passion that drives us.

    I have a passion for my students to succeed and maybe not at an "A" level, but to the level that is the best they can do. If they can give me the best they can do then they will have the courage to try harder and to accomplish more.

    These chapters are all interconnected. One word can't be used without another and one word leads to another and the end result is that we TEACH-our passion.

  5. I look forward to the upcoming school year because my students will have a lap top and I will be able to tap into their passions. They will have the opportunity to explore what they are interested in or passionate about or better yet maybe find something to be passionate about.

    Interesting comment by Vicki "There are times that it seems like the perseverance isn't enough but it is the passion that drives us." I have taught middle school for 27 years and it is definitely passion that keeps me going everyday.

  6. This chapter on passion positions itself as other cliches I used in the insurance business as "finding a person's hot button". During the last few weeks, having an opportunity to reflect on my colleagues replies, it seems to me that all of us are passionate about our students and education. No doubt, as educators, our struggle often comes with the lack of passion, both from students and their parents. Here is where we, as teachers, have a gift, the gift of discovering a student's desire, hot button, or passion. It's when a student's spark is lit, that the true learning potential takes place. The Chapter Takeaway's quote from Louis Auchincloss, "The older I get the more I realize that the only thing a teacher has to go on is the rare spark in a child's eyes" rang true. Most often, it's this spark we inherently look for acknowledging a student realizing their own passion; the desire that drives them. Etched on the back of my father's tombstone is his business motto, "Driven by winning ways." Passion is needed in all sectors of society, not just in education. To me, the author, Angela Maiers, is just doing what she wrote in her Table of Contents, "Redefining Success in the 21st Century.

  7. I like the section that talked about finding what you are passionate about. Many of the students that I work with do not know. I try to talk to them about what they enjoy with not a lot of success. I think finding out what you are passionate about will help students in figuring out what career areas might be good choices for them or for them to think about when they are not sure what they want to do after high school. It might be a good to have them do research on the areas that they are passionate about and find out what kinds of jobs are related to that area.

    1. At first I responded to Kerri, and then I saw that you had basically said the same thing. For many of our students, if we could just help them discover their passion, they could be well on their way to success. With these days including some trends toward pacing calendars, scripted curriculum and other directed efforts, there could be less time for students (and staff) to explore their interests.

      I am fortunate that, because I am in the library, I have the opportunity for students to visit when they have additional time, and sometimes that means they are pursuing individual interests. While I may assist with a variety of things, I don't personally give assignments. A great deal of my time is spent collaborating with teachers and the classes they bring to the media center. Part of my job is to help them find the best way to complete a project, so there is often choice involved. I also need to let students know that if they try something and it's just not right, it's okay, and it is not necessarily a failure.

      In addition, our district is hoping to add extended learning times, which I think will be ideal for students wanting to explore a passion. Maybe we could even designate one day after school as our "Genius Hour". There are a multitude of good resources out there now, and even though part of the idea is to incorporate it into classtime, I can easily provide time.

  8. I think it is hard to find time for kids to pursue what they are passionate about. We have such a limited time and a very rigid curriculumn, however, there's always a way to get in what you want. I think that the time that I could allow kids to have some freedom to pursue thier own interests as projects. We do writing projects or even science projects. This is a time when they have some freedom to choose what they want to learn about.

    I feel like I am getting to teach what I'm passionate about because I get to teach children! I enjoy talking with and getting to know my studetns. I love the things that fourth graders say! I think all teachers have a gift of being able to love and care about other peoples children.

  9. With the classes that I teach and the students that I am fortunate enough to come in contact with on a daily basis passion is definitely a part of the curriculum. By using differentiated instruction when planning lesson and assignments I give the students the opportunity to explore their passion(s) through the final product they produce.

    In addition, when working with college readiness and Preparing for College and Career students we encourage them to explore their passion(s) when researching careers and college degrees. I feel that I am very fortunate to be able to incorporate passion into my lessons on a frequent basis.

Even though I have moved into an admin job this year, I will have most of the high school providing some adaptation of the 20% Project this year as a way for kids to work on discovering or pursuing their passion. I found in last year's end of year research project that kids totally engaged in their own learning when given the opportunity, so this year we are going to allow that to be done each Friday...I cannot wait to see and hear how students and teachers do with this approach...

  11. It is amazing to me that I get to teach what I am passionate about! I am very passionate about teaching elementary math. I really have always been able to share my excitement and enthusiam for learning with all of my students, but being able to focus on math is a dream for me.

    This year we will be working on some projects in math class through PBL in the elementary high ability classes. Also, this year our math classes are fifteen minutes longer than before. This will give us much more time to spend on projects that are engaging to the students. It will be interesting to see where their passions take them!
